Myth Busting - behind the hype
Are GM crops taking over global agriculture?
- GM plantings make up a mere 2.4% of global agricultural crop land.
- Nearly 80% of the global area planted to GM crops is in just 3 countries - the U.S., Argentina and Brazil.
- The U.S. alone plants over 50% of the world's GM crops.
- Less than 3% of cropland in India and China is planted with GM crops, almost exclusively just 1 crop - GM cotton.
- In the European Union only a tiny amount of just 1 GM crop - a Monsanto maize - is being grown.
- This area has been shrinking for several years, mainly as a result of governmental bans.
- The impression that GM crops are taking over global agriculture has been promoted via the reports of the biotech-industry backed ISAAA.
- ISAAA has a history of making highly misleading claims.
