G-Shock

G-Shock ( Japaneseジ ー ョ ッ ク ク) is a Japanese watch brand founded in 1983 and belongs to the group Casio . The name G-Shock is the diminutive of Gravitational Shock . These watches are mainly designed for military use 1 , 2 , professional or extreme sports 3 . They are exclusively quartz watches with digital , analog or mixed display , the quartz movement being more precise than mechanical movement .

The first G-Shock was designed by Kikuo Ibe Yuichi Masuda and to equip the workers of the building at a time when the resistance of the watch was missing. The two engineers had to develop a watch resistant to 10 bar of pressure , a fall of 10 meters and with a battery life of 10 years. The objective was reached in April 1983. Since the brand has been constantly improving its watches and diversifying its models to the point of being part of the collective culture 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 as the archetype of the Utility watch “indestructible” 8 , 9 , 10 ,

The current G-Shock watches are all designed to withstand mechanical shock, vibration and deep water immersion. Several models are developed in direct collaboration with professionals especially with the pilots of the Royal Air Force 14 , the paratroopers brigade of North Cascades 15 , 16 and the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger 17 . In addition to the time, they have as basic functions an alarm clock , a stopwatch , a countdown and lighting. To these functions are added, according to the model, the internal memory to store data, the automatic calendar,

The first G-Shock

In the early 1980s, watches on the market were still experiencing significant problems of fragility in the building sector. Kikuo Ibe and Yuichi Masuda, engineers working for the group Casio 18 are then responsible for satisfying the demand of the companies of the BTP and to produce a more resistant model. The specifications, commonly referred to as “triple 10”, required a battery that lasted for at least 10 years, a resistance to water pressure of at least 10 bar and a resistance to a drop of at least 10 m on a hard surface 19 , 20 , 21 . Two years of testing will be needed before reaching the final product, as well as the development of a little over 200 prototypes 22 . The impact resistance was obtained by the use of 10 layers making it possible to protect the quartz module of the watch 19 . This protection also includes a polyurethane bumper , a stainless steel shell , a hardened mineral glass and a stainless steel screw base. The quartz module is floating, the mechanism floats freely in a polyurethane foam, with the external buttons and the LCD screen of the module connected by flexible cables. The first G-Shock was put on the market in April 1983, this launch was a success on the market of professional and technical watches. Take-off of the mark

The brand, however, has struggled to impose on Japan on the private market, but success in the US market opens the door to brand the world market 23 . G-Shock does not impose itself in Japan until after this worldwide repercussion 23 . Building on this success, several new models of G-Shock watches were subsequently marketed every year. In order to gain new market shares, the brand chose to modify its image of utilitarian and exclusively professional watches from the early 1990s. It was in this context that the Baby-G series was launched in 1991, targeting A female clientele. The G-Shock brand is rapidly gaining popularity but is not really able to change its image. At the end of 1990, 19 million G-Shock watch have been sold worldwide 24 . G-Shock watches are becoming very popular among mountaineers , firefighters , paramedics , people working on oil rigs, policemen , astronauts and soldiers . They still retain their image as utilitarian watches, despite their adoption by some celebrities including directors Tony Scott , Ron Howard and Francis Ford Coppola . On the contrary, this utility watch image (colloquially called the toolwatch in English) install even in the collective culture 8 . The G-Shock watches become the archetypal utilitarian watches “indestructible” 8 . So the old soldier of the British Special Forces , Andy McNab mentions in several of his novels using a G-Shock watch by his fictional character Nick Stone. Still in the literature, Mark Bowden indicates in his book The Fall of the Black Hawk that Delta Force members wore G-Shock watches during the events of October 3 and 4, 1993 . The brand today

In 2012 , the choice is made to create premium collections . A collaboration between the Royal Air Force and the research and development department of Tokyo is set up with the aim of targeting a very precise market: people who are both passionate about luxury watchmaking and technology 25 . Indeed, the luxury watch brands do not offer highly technological products nor offer the robustness of a G-Shock 26 . For his part, G-Shock was then oriented towards technology, robustness, seeing fashionable and colorful products and not towards luxury goods. It is a question of synthesising the two and of betting on products with high added value. Many fans of the brand since the 1980-1990 years now have stronger purchasing power 25 . Similarly for luxury watchmaking enthusiasts, a population with high purchasing power as well, it is common to own a G-Shock in addition to their prestigious models during the practice of activities at risk for their watches 11 , 27 , 28 . The first G-Shock Premium is the GW-A1000-1AER, paving the way for the Gravitymaster 25 collection . In 2013 , the figure of 70 million G-Shock is sold reached 29 . The brand has continued to innovate and now offers automatic synchronization based on atomic clocks as well as solar operation to stop having to adjust its watch or change battery. The brand also entered the market of watches connected with the appearance of models supporting Bluetooth technology 30 . In 2014, Casio introduced its Hybrid GPS function Wave Ceptor which automatically synchronizes the time via GPS signals and allows to have a watch always on time without worrying about the change of time zone.

G-Shock watches continue to acquire new functionalities adapted to specific activities. The models DW-5600C, DW-5600E, DW-5900, DW-6600 and DW-6900 are capable of space flight and continue to innovate in this direction. In 2010, G-Shock updated its model DW-5600E, replacing module 1545 with module number 3229. The GW-9400 Rangeman and the GWN-1000 Gulfmaster have a triple sensor with A digital compass, a thermometer, and a barometer / altimeter function. The MTG-S1000, GW-A1000 and GPW-1000 models feature Triple G Resist functionality that improves shock, centrifugal and vibration resistance.

The brand continues to try to erase its image of exclusively utilitarian watch and tries to adopt a more elegant line. Thus, many new models of G-Shock are analog with bracelets and a metal shell (steel or titanium). Limited-edition models are introduced more throughout the year and collaborations with other brands are regularly organized such as A Bathing Ape (Bape), Stussy 31 , Xlarge, KIKS TYO, Nano Universe, Levi’s , as well as Coca -Cola , Pulp68 Skateshop, Lucky Strike and Marlboro . Baby-G is no longer simply the feminine version of G-Shock watches,
